Funding Your Future Abroad

Education Abroad is committed to supporting every Terp's study abroad goals. At last month's Slice of Opportunity workshop, students learned about funding opportunities from Education Abroad staff and our partners at the National Scholarships Office, including the Gilman International Scholarship, Fund for Education Abroad and UMD-specific scholarships. A special thanks to our Gilman Scholars Zohneseh and Ellie who offered advice to fellow Pell Grant recipients.

October Safety Month 2025

Each October, UMD celebrates Transportation Safety Month to promote safe travel habits for all Terps–whether you walk, bike, scoot or drive.

This year’s campaign, "Safety is Not a Game," reminds us that every decision on the road matters. There are no second chances when it comes to your safety and the safety of others.

Join us throughout the month for giveaways, demos and events as you learn how to stay safe while navigating campus. See our calendar of events for details.

Bonus: Take the pledge to share the road and be entered into a raffle to win $125 for The University Book Center and other great prizes!

Key Messages:

  • Be visible: Wear bright or reflective gear and use lights on your bike or e-scooter. Drivers, stay alert and watch out for other road users, especially when daylight fades.

  • Protect your shell: Wear a helmet when biking or scooting–it’s the easiest way to protect your brain if you fall or crash.

  • Follow the rules of the road:  Stick to the 15 mph campus speed limit. Obey stop signs and traffic signals, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

  • Ride predictably: Stay in your lane and wait your turn–no weaving through traffic or skipping the line.

  • Keep sidewalks clear: Sidewalks and crosswalks are for people walking or using mobility devices. If you are riding, walk your bike or e-scooter in these areas. Pedestrians should avoid walking on roads and in bike paths.

  • Micromobility vehicles should stick to bike lanes and roads: Ride where it’s safe and legal. E-scooters are too fast for sidewalks.

  • Park responsibly: Keep sidewalks, ramps and entrances accessible. Use bike racks or designated parking areas. Never store or charge electric vehicles indoors.

  • Look out for each other: Stay alert and share the road respectfully. Whether walking, driving or riding, safety depends on all of us.

More safety guidelines across all modes of transportation can be found on our website.
