Neuroscience Coffee Chats are back!

Neuroscience Coffee Chats 

Are you interested in neuroscience research but unsure where to begin? Would you like to learn more about graduate school or explore potential career paths?

Join the Neuroscience Coffee Chats, a casual and welcoming space where undergraduate and Ph.D. students can connect, exchange experiences, and discuss research opportunities, graduate education, and careers in neuroscience. Whether you are actively searching for a research position or simply curious about what research involves, these conversations are a great opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable insight from members of the neuroscience community.

Coffee Chats will be held on select Fridays from 1:30–2:30 p.m. in Biology-Psychology Building, Room 1208:

 Constitutional Order in an Age of Disorder: With Professor Aziz Rana and Dean Gustavo Flores-Macías 

About the Speaker

Aziz Rana is the J. Donald Monan, S.J., University Professor of Law and Government at Boston College, previously a professor at Cornell Law School. His work focuses on American constitutional law and political development, especially how ideas of race, citizenship, and empire have shaped U.S. identity.

He is the author of The Two Faces of American Freedom (2014) and The Constitutional Bind (2024), which examine the links between constitutionalism, power, and political culture. Rana has written widely for major publications and academic journals, serves on several editorial boards, and is affiliated with organizations including the Council on Foreign Relations and the Quincy Institute. He holds degrees from Harvard (AB, PhD) and Yale Law School (JD).

The University of Maryland School of Public Policy and the Maryland Democracy Initiative welcome Professor Aziz Rana for a moderated discussion with Dean Gustavo Flores-Macías exploring the role of legally trained professionals in safeguarding the Constitution amid rising political polarization, institutional strain and challenges to democratic norms. As a UMD First Year Book event, the conversation will examine how lawyers, scholars and public servants can help uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions and navigate moments of crisis with integrity and clarity.

About the Speaker

Ambassador Ibrahim is a senior diplomat representing the Republic of Azerbaijan, dedicated to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing Azerbaijan’s foreign policy priorities abroad. Over the course of his diplomatic career, he has contributed to initiatives in international cooperation, economic development and regional stability. As Ambassador, he works closely with government institutions, international organizations and the wider community to promote dialogue, expand trade and investment opportunities and enhance cultural and educational exchange between Azerbaijan and the United States.

The Douglass Dialogues: What to Us Now is the Fourth of July?

 


The Frederick Douglass Center for Leadership Through the Humanities will host its inaugural event in a new series called the Douglass Dialogues, created to highlight diverse viewpoints and model nuanced conversations on timely and complex topics. 

The event on April 20th : 1 - 2:30pm  at The Driskell Center will feature a conversation inspired by Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

Three panelists will invite us to explore and confront our relationship to and outlook on the United States as the country observes its 250th anniversary this year. Hosted by Douglass Center director Quincy Mills, associate professor of history and associate dean of graduate affairs, the event features:
  • Christopher Bonner, associate professor of history
  • Janelle Wong, professor of American studies and government and politics
  • Larry Thompson, John A. Sibley professor in corporate and business law at the University of Georgia and former deputy Attorney General of the United States under George W. Bush
