Expanded Education Abroad Funding to Support Students in 2027

Education Abroad will award approximately $1 million to students studying abroad in 2027, with new funding opportunities, increased individual awards and earlier scholarship decisions designed to make study abroad more accessible and support financial planning for students and families.

Earlier Scholarship Decisions Education Abroad scholarships are now awarded on a rolling basis, with the first notifications sent in early August. This gives students and families better clarity about available funding as they make decisions and financially plan for study abroad. Students are encouraged to apply early. Expanded Education Abroad Departmental Fund Award amounts for this general scholarship increased while eligibility requirements remain the same. Students may receive: Up to $2,500 for short-term programs Up to $4,000 for semester programs Financial need will continue to be the primary consideration for awarding. NEW: First Abroad Scholarship Beginning with Winter/Spring/Spring Break 2027 applicants, eligible first-generation students studying abroad for the first time may receive: $1,000 for short-term programs $2,000 for semester programs NEW: Graduate Student Travel Grant Beginning Winter 2027, eligible graduate students participating in Maryland-led short-term programs may apply for a new $1,000 Graduate Student Travel Grant. NEW: Emergency Funding A new Education Abroad Emergency Fund will launch this fall to assist students experiencing unexpected financial hardship before departure or while abroad.

Summer Undergraduate Research Conference 2026

This summer, the Office of Undergraduate Research will host its third annual Summer Undergraduate Research Conference. Taking place on Friday, July 24 from 1:30-3:45 pm in the Colony Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union, this event will provide UMD undergraduates from all fields with the opportunity to share posters about summer works-in-progress and recently completed projects and to learn about research undertaken by other students. 

Undergraduates from other institutions who are participating in UMD summer research programs are also very welcome to present.

We encourage students wishing to share a poster at the event to submit a proposal to present by the recommended deadline, Wednesday, July 1 at 11:59 pm. The final deadline for submitting a proposal is Monday, July 6 at 11:59 pm.

Global Career Accelerator - An Experiential Learning Experience

 A new for-credit experiential learning option is available to undergraduate students this summer, UMD Global Career Accelerator.

Course Description

The Global Career Accelerator is an experiential, digital program that enables undergraduate students from all majors to gain authentic work experience and in-demand global skills working on projects co-designed with industry partners such as OpenAI, L’Oréal, and Nike.

We know that schedules, geography, and financial constraints can sometimes make traditional internship formats difficult to navigate. This pilot removes some of those barriers while providing an opportunity to do meaningful work and build professional skills, with structure, mentorship, and academic support. 

Key details: 

• Credits: Students may register for 3 credits (UNIV305 WB11) or 6 credits (UNIV306 WB11) 

• Registration: Students will be directed from the UMD Global Career Accelerator website to the UMD course registration website to register.  The registration deadline is May 31, 2026. 

• Delivery: Fully online, with both synchronous and asynchronous components. Students must select one of the following LiveLab options and commit to attending it for the entire course:

• Mondays, 3:00–4:30 p.m. ET

• Mondays, 7:00–8:30 p.m. ET  

• Eligibility: Open to undergraduate students of any major.  

• Dates: June 1 to August 7, 2026. This 10-week course does not follow the standard summer session schedule.

UMD Summer Language Institute (Arabian, Korean, Persian)

The Summer Language Institute at UMD is offering an intensive language study opportunity that may be useful for BSOS students. Through the Summer Language Institute, students can gain a year's worth of language study (10 credits) in just 9 weeks. This is a great option for students who need to complete language requirements but have busy schedules during the Fall and Spring semesters. 

This summer, SLI will be offering a hybrid program with in-person and virtual courses for Arabic, Korean, and Persian. Students can take Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced level courses. Scholarships are available to students who apply by the April 17th Priority Deadline. The final deadline to apply is May 15, 2026.

UMD Lab Manager Position

The Language, Experience, and Development (LEAD) lab at the University of Maryland, College Park, directed by Dr. Rachel Romeo (she/her/hers), is seeking a lab manager. Expected start date is early summer 2026 (to allow for overlap with current lab manager), though there is some flexibility.

 

The LEAD lab investigates how children’s early experiences influence their neural and cognitive development, with a strong focus on language, literacy, and communicative development. We combine methods from developmental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, communication sciences, and education to study how developing brains adapt to varying environments and lead to unique developmental paths. A primary focus is to better understand both the causes and consequences of socioeconomic disparities in learning and development, and how translational science may better support educational equity. 

 

The lab manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the lab, including recruiting families and community partners, implementing behavioral and neuroimaging studies (primarily MRI and fNIRS), managing data storage and processing, teaching and supervising undergraduate research assistants to implement studies and process data, coordinating IRBs and other research documentation, and managing lab equipment and the lab website. Primary duties involve recruiting and running participants across several research studies, including ones that are lab based and community-engaged research projects that are primarily off site. The lab manager will also have the opportunity to develop their own research projects, co-author manuscripts, and attend conferences. This position is ideal for an individual interested in gaining additional research experience before applying to graduate programs or research-related careers.

 

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, human development, communication sciences, computer science, or related field. Previous research experience, programming knowledge, and/or experience working with children and families is desirable, but not required. Individuals who are adaptable, creative, detail-oriented, friendly, and dedicated to inclusion will be well-suited for this role. Job responsibilities take place in College Park, MD and surrounding areas with a primarily in-person commitment and some flexibility for hybrid work.

Interdisciplinary AI summer undergrad research opportunity

TRAILS-SURF is a ten-week full time summer program starting June 1. Students get an $8,000 stipend (but not housing). 

The Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law and Society is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 TRAILS Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (TRAILS-SURF)!

TRAILS-SURF is a 10-week program running June 1 through August 7, 2026, that brings together an interdisciplinary team of undergraduates to conduct hands-on research on trustworthy artificial intelligence at the University of Maryland in College Park. Fellows receive an $8,000 stipend and have the opportunity to work alongside internationally recognized UMD faculty and graduate student mentors.

Paid summer 2026 research experiences for BSOS undergraduate students. Please read websites carefully for due dates and application criteria.

UM Scholars Program - Paid research opportunities for UMD students through MPowering the State. Closing date is February 22, 2026, but apply early as applications will be read on a rolling basis. Students will work with researchers at the Maryland Department of Health or with faculty at University of Maryland Baltimore in summer 2026.  You do not have to propose your own project. You will be joining an existing research team. Each student receives a stipend.

BSOS Summer Scholars - Supports individual undergraduate research projects in any behavioral and social sciences discipline in the summer ($3000 stipend). Proposals are due on February 27, 2026. You need to have your own proposal idea and a BSOS research mentor. The application for summer 2026 can be submitted via InfoReady, the campus research funding application portal.
