CMNS recruitment ambassadors

CMNS Recruitment Ambassadors help prospective freshmen and transfers learn why UMD is a great place to study CMNS! 

Ambassadors assist with student panels and CMNS information tables at admissions open houses, meet individually/in small groups with prospective students, sit on virtual Zoom panels, represent CMNS and their peers, and provide feedback about the mindset of the students with whom they interact. Typical time commitment for this volunteer position is one hour a week, though it will depend on your schedule as you can decide what events to sign up for. The best ambassadors can easily express what they love about UMD, regardless of whether it was their original first choice college when they applied for admission. You will never be asked to “sell” UMD – you can simply talk about your experiences and answer questions to help students make the best decision for them. Ambassadors make connections with faculty and staff in CMNS and gain valuable leadership and public speaking skills.

Clinical Research Volunteer Position

The Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) conducts cutting-edge research for improving both the health and quality of life following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Since 1987, our research has greatly expanded the knowledge base with respect to long-term challenges that people with TBI face, as well as approaches to

leading better lives after injury. The Brain Injury Research Center is one of 16 TBI Model Systems Centers across the United States, each providing the highest level of comprehensive and multidisciplinary rehabilitation care. The BIRC-MS also serves as a training center and an information center for the public. Our research program has received grants, mostly from federal sources including the National Institutes of Health (NIH); the Department of Defense (DoD); and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Under current funding, our research program includes several ongoing studies. These include a multicenter studyfocused on understanding and improving long-term cognitive and psychological health after TBI, a study evaluating the most effective approaches for implementing an internet-delivered group intervention to improve emotion regulation skills after TBI in routine clinical practice, a study aimed at improving the detection and response to intimate partner violence (IPV) related-TBI, and a study examining the late effects of traumatic brain injury that includes a brain donation component. Volunteers will spend the majority of their time in an office setting and can expect to perform the following tasks:

data scoring and entry; medical record requests and abstractions; data transfer to online databases; preparing and testing databases for screening data on multiple projects; assisting with inpatient and outpatient recruitment across all studies; conducting phone screens, evaluations, and study follow up interviews; filing and other office-related duties as needed. This is a volunteer position.

Volunteers may also have the opportunity to shadow study visits and attend presentations, grand rounds, and/or brain cuttings of their choosing throughout the medical center. In the past, our volunteers have had the opportunity to conduct independent projects in collaboration with our staff and faculty.

Volunteering opportunity from Carte Clinics

Carte Clinics is recruiting volunteer pre-med students to assist with comprehensive strategic health assessments, working alongside physicians, medical specialists, physical therapists, and fellow pre-medical and medical students. 

Volunteers will participate in both patient advising and clinic operations, gaining valuable insights into how advanced health evaluations are conducted.

Student Leadership Opportunity

Applications for Kesem at University of Maryland's Executive Board will remain open until August 1st! Kesem is a nationwide nonprofit organization that supports kids through and beyond a parent’s cancer. While our main programming includes a free week-long sleepaway camp for kids in the DMV, we also provide year-round programming, reunions, and individualized support depending on the needs of families.

Being a part of our Executive Board means you get to play a hands-on role in the functioning of our chapter. Not only will you have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of children affected by a parent's cancer, but you will also make lifelong friendships along the way.

Serving on the Executive Board requires a 3-5 hour commitment per week, depending on the position.

Register to Volunteer - Conversations to Remember

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. 

We are partnering with students volunteers to help with these seniors. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and student volunteers could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of the volunteers' time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. 

Typically, students volunteer one hour per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for at least 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

HopePunk is a type of speculative fiction that stands in contrast to the imagined dystopias of tomorrow – and the real dystopian trends of today. HopePunk centers fighting for positive change, kindness as a radical act, and finding strength in the community to overcome challenges. The term was coined via a Tumblr post in 2017 by fantasy author Alexandra Rowland. It upends narratives of apathy, cynicism, and hopelessness by imagining worlds where collective rebellion and resistance lead to liberation.

The theme for the 2023 Summit is a call for agitation: What can we do now so that the future is far better than the present for disabled people?
