HOPE. HEAL. MOBILIZE....through meditation and mindfulness in the weeks leading up to and just following the election.

Come join students, faculty, and staff in our collective commitment to belonging, peace, addressing bias, and promoting justice for 9 days of meditation in the lead up to, and immediately following, the election.

Meditation has been shown by research to reduce bias across difference, burnout, stress hormones, and increase most dimensions of wellness. Recent research has shown that there are societal benefits to collective meditation as well.* We will use this time to reduce our stress, strengthen our commitment to reducing bias, send loving kindness into the world, and surround our community with a sense of wellbeing and belonging in the midst of and to honor our differences.

Not able to vote? Please still join us. Choosing not to vote? Please still join us. Never meditated before? Join us. Meditated forever? Join us. If your mind and body aren't sure if you can do this, that is okay! Come be in a peaceful space with us, take a nap with us, or color with us.

Neurodiverse and diverse bodies/minds celebrated in this trauma-informed space. Bring a pillow or mat if you want to. Bring a water bottle if possible. Need accommodations or interpretation? Please request as soon as possible by emailing Beth Douthirt-Cohen, from the School of Public Health, at bdc1@umd.edu.

Sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Public Health, the College of Education, the School of Public Policy, the College of Information, Memorial Chapel, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Bias Incident Support Services, College Park Scholars, the Department of Resident Life, and the Division of Student Affairs.

World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day

This coming Monday, November 13 is World Kindness Day! VP Georgina Dodge is encouraging all of us to do something kind for others. "It doesn't have to cost anything," she explains. "Just a compliment or a smile can go a long way!"

Some ideas Dr. Dodge shared, courtesy of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation:
  • Compliment the first three people you talk to.
  • Write a hand-written note to a teacher.
  • Say good morning to the person next to you on the elevator.
  • Pick up litter. Spend 10 minutes cleaning a park or your neighborhood.
  • Place uplifting notes in library books, on restroom mirrors, on someone's locker, or on their computer screen.
  • Dedicate 24 hours to spreading positivity on social media.
  • Hold up inspiring signs during rush hour.
  • Leave a generous tip.
  • Send flowers to a friend.
  • Set an alarm to go off three times on World Kindness Day. When the alarm sounds, stop what you're doing and call/text/email someone simply to tell them how awesome they are.
How will you show kindness to others next Monday and beyond? Let us know!

Disability Global Summit 2023

Including Disability Global Summit 2023

Tuesday April 25th through Thursday April 27th, 2023

HopePunk: Persevering, Building Community, Chasing Hope

REGISTER NOW:

Join us at this year’s Summit by registering at: https://includingdisabilityglobalsummit2023.eventbrite.com

HopePunk is a type of speculative fiction that stands in contrast to the imagined dystopias of tomorrow – and the real dystopian trends of today. HopePunk centers fighting for positive change, kindness as a radical act, and finding strength in the community to overcome challenges. The term was coined via a Tumblr post in 2017 by fantasy author Alexandra Rowland. It upends narratives of apathy, cynicism, and hopelessness by imagining worlds where collective rebellion and resistance lead to liberation.

The theme for the 2023 Summit is a call for agitation: What can we do now so that the future is far better than the present for disabled people?

EVENT PROGRAM:

Recently, we announced the IDGS Event Program including Keynote Speakers Liz Jackson and D’Arcee Charington Neal, a screening of the award-winning film “Dani’s Twins”, and many more exciting presentations!

VOLUNTEER:

As we prepare for the 2023 Including Disability Global Summit, we’re enlisting a support team who can help ensure the conference is a positive experience for all attendees, presenters, and fellow volunteers. If you’d be willing to serve as part of our team, please complete the Volunteer Interest Form.

STAY IN TOUCH:

If you are interested in receiving future notices for presentations, performances, and other aspects of the Including Disability Global Summit (IDGS), please send a request to disabilitysummit-mailing+subscribe@umd.edu

Naloxone Training

The University of Maryland Health Center is designated as an Overdose Response Program (ORP) through the Maryland Department of Health.

As part of this designation, we offer overdose response resources to the UMD community, free of charge.

One of the most popular resources we offer is Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication.  Similarly to how an EpiPen temporarily blocks the life-threatening symptoms of an allergic reaction (i.e. inability to breathe) while emergency medical assistance arrives, Naloxone offers this temporary support for those experiencing an opioid overdose.

To get your free Naloxone through the Health Center, all you have to do is attend a brief training, which goes over how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose, instructions for using Naloxone, and what to do as emergency medical assistance makes its way to you and the person in crisis.

Trainings are all offered in the Sahet Room of the Health Center, just past the main entrance to the building, and are free to any UMD community member interested in attending!  Registration is required for attendance.
