These scholarships are awarded to full-time STEM majors who are planning to work for NASA or other space-research or aerospace-related careers. 

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at UMD. Eligibility requirements also include a 3.0 GPA or better. 

Space Grant puts a strong emphasis on funding students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in Astronomy, including women, persons of color, veterans, and LGBT+ students.  It's not absolutely certain that NASA will provide funding for this scholarship this year, but the organizers are going forward with recruitment in the hopes that funding will solidify by the summer.  Hopefully this will be ascertained before recipients are selected, which usually happens in July.  

(Please note: if you are in an engineering major, there is a separate Space Grant Scholarship program specifically for engineering - contact your engineering academic advisor to find out about this.)

Awards are typically in the $1k - 2k range and must be used for educational expenses (tuition, books, fees, and room and board). The award is for one year and is renewable annually; current scholarship recipients must re-apply each year.

Adele H. Stamp Memorial Award Applications are OPEN

In 1983, the Union at the University of Maryland was named for Adele H. Stamp in honor of her outstanding work as Dean of Women from 1922 to 1960. In recognition of her many contributions to the University community, the Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life is proud to give an award in her name to the undergraduate or graduate student who has worked to further similar causes. The individual receiving this award must have demonstrated personal commitment to high academic achievement; to provide programs, services or events within the STAMP that help to establish a sense of campus community; and have served as a leader for campus causes or organizations.

 

Criteria for selection includes:

· Affiliation with STAMP or student organizations that use STAMP

· 3.0 GPA for undergraduates or 3.5 GPA for graduates

· Demonstrated leadership skills

· Active involvement in the life of the campus community

The recipient of the award will be recognized at the University Annual Student Leadership Awards Program (May 3rd) with a plaque and a cash prize as well as an inscription of their name on the Wall of Honor located on the first floor off of the main lobby of STAMP.

Maryland Degree Completion Scholarship

We are pleased to announce the availability of a Maryland Degree Completion Scholarship, designed to support eligible undergraduate degree-seeking and eligible undergraduate certificate program students who are close to completing their academic program and may be facing financial barriers to graduation.

This scholarship aims to help eligible undergraduate students persist and complete their programs by providing targeted financial assistance for remaining coursework. Funds may be used to support tuition, fees, housing, and food.

Eligibility highlights include:

• Enrollment in an undergraduate degree or eligible undergraduate certificate program
• Demonstrated financial need based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• Satisfactory academic progress
• Junior or senior status based on earned credits towards program completion, and have a maximum of two semesters remaining to complete the program

Eligible students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as funding is limited and awards will be made on a rolling basis.

Neuroethics Essay Contest

Essay call for the Neuroethics Essay Contest, organized by the International Neuroethics Society (INS) and the International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA)

The contest is open to high school students, post-secondary students, and early-career trainees currently enrolled in or accepted to a program. Professionals are not eligible.

 

Submissions are welcome in the following categories:

The Neuroethics Essay Contest encourages students and trainees to examine the ethical concerns in research, law, and policy related to the mind and brain. By seeking essays that bring original perspectives to neuroethics discourse, the contest raises awareness of the neuroethics discipline among the next generation.

 

The contest is held annually and is organized by the members of the Student/Postdoc Committee of the International Neuroethics Society (INS) and editors of the IYNA Journal, published by the International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA).

MD Space Grant Scholarships - Apply by May 14, 2025

Space Grant puts a strong emphasis on funding students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in Astronomy, including women, persons of color, veterans, and LGBT+ students.  So far, this program had not been specifically canceled for its DEI focus, however, you may be aware that the Trump administration is proposing to cut NASA's budget by almost half, and so it's unclear how any major budget reductions might affect the scholarship program.  Hopefully the budget will be settled before recipients are selected, which usually happens in July.

UMD’s 2025 Goldwater Scholars are:

They are among 441 Goldwater Scholars selected from 1,350 nominees nationally.

Unpaid Internship Scholarships for Students

 Bright Futures Initiative: Unpaid Internship Scholarship

Application Opens: Monday, March 31, 2025

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,250 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships.

 

Eligibility

• A secured unpaid on-campus and off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency for summer 2025.
• A new internship experience during summer 2025 and completed by the start of the fall 2025 semester.
• Supervised by a professional in the field.
• Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for Fall 2025.  May 2025 graduating seniors are not eligible.
• Preference will be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.

 

This scholarship is generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

 

Sustainability Unpaid Internship Scholarship

Application Opens: Monday, April 7, 2025

Application Closes: Friday, May 2, 2025

 

The Sustainability Internship Scholarship will help off-set expenses associated with an unpaid internship.  Scholarship awards ranging from $1,000-$1,750 are available to help offset expenses.

Eligibility

• The internship must be related to sustainability or with an organization that aligns with the UN’s organization aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
• A secured summer unpaid internship with a nonprofit or government agency.
• Supervised by a professional in the field.
• All undergraduate class years are welcome to apply. May 2025 graduating seniors are not eligible. 

 

This scholarship is made possible through a partnership between UMD's Student Government Association, Office of Sustainability and the University Career Center & The President’s Promise.

 

The CMNS Undergraduate Scholarship Application period is now open!

We are pleased to announce that the period for scholarship application is now open, and will continue until 5 PM on Sunday, May 4 2025.  Application review continues throughout the summer, and students will be notified of awards by mid-August 2025.

Students seeking support must complete an electronic application to help us review their qualifications/match for available scholarships and awards. Students will be considered for all college scholarships for which they are eligible.    

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible for an award if:

• Your primary major is in CMNS. Please note that Computer Engineering is NOT a CMNS primary major
• You have a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the University of Maryland Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). This allows us to determine financial need. Students who do not have a FAFSA on file for the coming academic year will not be considered for CMNS scholarships.
• You are currently enrolled in the spring semester and will be returning for the next academic year. CMNS scholarships are not awarded to new fall freshmen and transfer students
• Students who received a CMNS scholarship in 2024-25 and are continuing their studies in 2025-26 MUST REAPPLY to be considered for a scholarship in the coming academic year. 

Application Information

• Our scholarship application is now part of the Scholarship Universe (SU) platform being used by the University and the Office of Student Financial Aid. The SU platform will allow you to apply for CMNS Undergraduate Scholarships and to search/apply for other on-campus and off-campus scholarships you may be eligible for now or in the future.
• The SU platform will communicate with your @terpmail.umd.edu or @umd.edu email account, so be sure to look for those communications. When you have successfully submitted your application, be sure to see that you have received a confirmation email (and check your spam folder as well). All scholarship award notifications will be made through the SU platform to these same email accounts.
• In addition to brief demographic and major/career interest questions, students should be prepared to cut and paste a resume into their application.
• Because the SU platform draws a lot of demographic and financial eligibility information from UMD records, the application completion time should be much shorter. We estimate that it will take 30 minutes or less to complete the application.
• You may start/stop your application without losing information.  However, you must complete/submit the application for it to be reviewed and considered. Submitted applications will receive an email confirmation.

The CMNS scholarship application is now open (March 27, 2025), and must be completed and submitted by May 4, 2025 at 5 PM.  This is a FIRM deadline, as the scholarship application cannot be reopened after that time.

Dingman Internship - $5k stipend for students

 

The Dingman Center For Entrepreneurship’s Kathryn Stewart and Dugal Impact Fellowships provide stipends of $5,000 to students (any major!) who are looking to spend their summer interning at a booming startup or social enterprise while learning from unique CEOs and business owners!

This program not only offers valuable hands-on experience but also bridges the gap created by unpaid internships, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their pursuit of professional growth.

Scholarship on ethical issues related to the brain and mind

The International Neuroethics Society and Società Italiana di Neuroetica invite students, researchers, and professionals from around the world to submit session proposals and research abstracts for Neuroethics 2025. The conference includes opportunities to participate virtually or in-person in Munich, Germany, on April 23-25, 2025.

 

You do not need to be a member of either Society to submit, and submissions may but are not required to align with the meeting’s theme on 'Neuroethics and AI'. The theme will focus attention on the many questions and ethical issues related to the brain and mind that emerge with the latest advances in and applications of AI and neurotechnology.

 

Research Abstracts

Submitted research may address any topic related to neuroethics — a field that studies the implications of neuroscience for human self-understanding, ethics, and policy. Abstracts should clearly demonstrate that the research in some way relates to the brain and/or brain functions, and that it engages in some way with ethics and ethical, legal and/or clinical considerations.

Abstracts should be 250-350 words in length and must be in English. Authors with an accepted research abstract will be invited to present a poster or give a talk. The priority submission deadline is October 31, 2024. See the call for complete instructions.   Authors at all career stages are eligible and encouraged to submit, and may submit up to two abstracts. There are no restrictions or limitations regarding an author’s program, discipline, or area of study. We especially welcome abstracts from our colleagues from marginalized groups and/or with perspectives that are underrepresented in the field.

ABSTRACTS

Session Proposals

We are seeking session proposals to be considered for the scientific program. Proposals must include a draft title, a list of confirmed speakers, and a written description that is 250-350 words in length. Proposals must be in English.   There are few restrictions regarding the format of the session and we encourage creative and interdisciplinary approaches. Sessions can be either 60 or 90 minutes long, and may address any topic related to neuroethics.

Proposals may align with the meeting’s theme, but this is not required. The program will include a broad range of topics related to the ethical, legal, clinical, social, and policy considerations raised by brain sciences and technology.   Proposals are due by October 31, 2024.
