Research and Funding opportunities targeted towards underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students in neuroscience.

 Postbaccalaureate Research Education Programs (PREP) at various institutions [UG]

  • Eligibility: Recently graduated (within 3 years) or seniors intending to graduate with a biomedically relevant degree. PREP is intended for individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds (socially, culturally, economically, or educationally). Nationally, racial and ethnic groups who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedical/behavioral research include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians, and citizens of the U.S. Pacific Island. The student should have a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in the biomedical sciences. This program is open to US citizens and permanent residents.

  • PREP is typically a 1-year program designed to train and prepare students to apply to graduate school. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research, take graduate-level coursework, and participate in professional development activities tailored to their specific needs. Programs offer a living stipend and may also offer health insurance, tuition remission, and funding to travel to scientific conferences.

  • Deadline: Many are currently closed, but UChicago is accepting applications until March 31, 2023

Gamma Mu Foundation Scholarship [UG/G]

  • Eligibility: gay men under 35 years of age, have completed high school (or GED) by June of the current year, and be a U.S. citizen, and who want to further their education at a college, university, or vocational or professional training program for vocational and technical training, associate, bachelors or graduate degrees.

  • One-year award of between $1,000 and $2,500 to use during the following year of under- or post-graduate study or in the vocational program in which he is enrolled

  • Deadline: March 31, 2023

BHW Women in STEM Scholarship [UG/G]

  • Eligibility: Women who are pursuing an undergraduate or master's degree and are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics during the 2023 school year.

  • $3,000 scholarship

  • Deadline: April 15, 2023

Neuro-Horizons program at the University of Cincinnati [UG]

  • Eligibility: Prospective graduate students who identify themselves as an underrepresented minority (URM) or from a disadvantaged background (DB). 

  • 3-day workshop, June 28-30th, 2023. The program will include research talks, information sessions for the graduate school application process, lab tours, and social activities with current students. Travel, food, and lodging expenses are covered for all students accepted for this workshop, and there is no cost to apply.

  • Deadline: April 15, 2023

JAX Postbac Researcher [UG]

  • Eligibility: Recently graduated or graduating seniors with a strong foundation of coursework in the biological sciences, neuroscience, computer science and/or mathematics who are from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, have a disability, and/or a disadvantaged background. This program is open to non-US citizens who are able to obtain an OPT through their institution.

  • The grant supports a two-year post-bac fellowship in genomics and data science (including neurogenomics). The program will focus on research training opportunities and career development programs tailored for trainees from historically marginalized communities who aspire to go on to graduate studies and careers in genomics, genome technologies and data science. 

  • Deadline: April 15, 2023


Year-round

NIH Postbaccalaureate IRTA [UG]

  • Eligibility: College graduates who received their bachelor's degrees less than THREE years prior to the date they begin the program or seniors graduating in the spring. Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in health-related sciences; Students with disabilities; students who are Pell Grant-eligible; students who are enrolled in Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); students who identify as LGBTQ; and individuals disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively impacted their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters, are encouraged to apply.

  • The NIH Postbac IRTA program provides recent college graduates who are planning to apply to graduate or professional (medical/dental/pharmacy/nursing/veterinary, etc.) school an opportunity to spend one or two years performing full-time research at the NIH. Trainees will receive a stipend. 

  • Deadline: Rolling admissions year-round
