NACS Research and funding opportunities for Special Student Populations

 AAUW International Fellowships [G]

  • Eligibility: The program provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career.

  • Fellowship amount - Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000, Doctoral: $25,000

  • Deadline: November 15, 2023


NIH Loan Repayment Program [G]

  • Eligibility: U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or permanent resident and possess an M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., Psy.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., O.D., D.V.M., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution by the LRP award start date. 

  • Repayment of up to $50,000 annually of a researcher's qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research.

  • Deadline: November 16, 2023


Opening this month:

STAR-U at Columbia University [UG]

  • Eligibility: Rising Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Seniors who graduate Spring of 2024 who are part of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group, disability, and/or disadvantaged background.

  • 2-month fully funded research training program designed to encourage undergraduate students from diverse and underrepresented communities to pursue further graduate studies and careers in aging and neuroscience-related research. Throughout the summer, in addition to carrying out an individualized research project alongside Columbia faculty, students engage in a range of learning and professional development opportunities and become part of a supportive learning community.

SURP4US at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai [UG]

  • Eligibility: Sophomores and juniors from traditionally underrepresented/disadvantaged backgrounds with a strong background in science, a passion for research, and a desire to pursue it professionally in a biomedical PhD or MD/PhD program.

  • 10-week program from June to August in which students will participate in intensive research training and receive assistance and guidance on the PhD application process, among other activities. Students will receive a $5,000 stipend, and housing in ISMMS student residence or housing allowance, depending on availability.

  • Deadline: January 15, 2024


STAR-PREP at UM-School of Medicine [UG]

  • Eligibility: Recently graduated (within 3 years) and are: from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, an individual with disabilities, and/or from a disadvantaged background (socially, culturally, economically, or educationally). Racial and ethnic groups who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedical/behavioral research include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians, and citizens of the U.S. Pacific Island. The student should have a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in the biomedical sciences. This program is open to US citizens and permanent residents.

  • 1-year mentored research training program designed to encourage and prepare recent baccalaureate graduates coming from underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences for successful entry into a top-notch graduate program. Students receive a salary of $35,568 per year, health benefits, and tuition remission.

  • Deadline: January 17, 2024


WUSTL ENDURE Summer Program [UG]

  • Eligibility: Students from an underrepresented group (e.g. racial and ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, individuals from low income households and first-generation college students) enrolled full-time in a baccalaureate degree program Interested in research and pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD in a neuroscience-related field. This program is open to non-US citizens.

  • Prepares undergraduates from diverse backgrounds for neuroscience PhD programs. We combine outstanding research training, a rigorous curriculum and an empowering support system so participants thrive on their path to graduate school and beyond

  • Deadline: February 2, 2024


PREP at UW-Madison [UG]

  • Eligibility: Recently graduated (within 3 years) and are: from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, an individual with disabilities, and/or from a disadvantaged background (socially, culturally, economically, or educationally). Nationally, racial and ethnic groups who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedical/behavioral research include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians, and citizens of the U.S. Pacific Island.   • UW-Madison’s PREP provides students with the skills and competencies necessary to enter distinguished graduate programs in a biomedical sciences research field. Students are paired with faculty for hands-on research projects and an individual development plan.

  • Deadline: February 15, 2024


PIKE-PREP at UC-Denver [UG]

  • Eligibility: Recently graduated (within 3 years) and are: from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, an individual with disabilities, and/or from a disadvantaged background (socially, culturally, economically, or educationally). Nationally, racial and ethnic groups who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedical/behavioral research include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians, and citizens of the U.S. Pacific Island. The student should have a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in the biomedical sciences. This program is open to US citizens and permanent residents.

  • A 1-year multi-dimensional mentoring and research training experience to prepare underrepresented post-baccalaureate students to enroll and succeed in a top-tier PhD or MD-PhD program and commit to a career in biomedical research. PIKE-PREP scholars will receive a salary of approximately $35,000, plus an additional $5,000 to pay for health, dental, and vision benefits, as well as tuition remission and expenses for travel.

  • Deadline: March 15, 2024, but the program has rolling admissions, so early applications are encouraged
