The Department of Kinesiology will be hosting the Clark-Whitall Lecture for the Spring 2025 semester on:
Date: Friday, April 18, 2025
Time: 9:30 AM
Location: Friedgen Family Student Lounge
We are excited to welcome Dr. Amy Bastian as this semester’s distinguished speaker.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Bastian is a renowned neuroscientist and physical therapist who serves as the Chief Science Officer at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and is a Professor of Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the neural control of human movement.
Lecture Title: Learning and Relearning Human Movement
Overview:
Dr. Bastian will focus on -
- Motor learning, which depends on a suite of brain mechanisms that are driven by different signals and operate on timescales ranging from minutes to years.
- Understanding these processes requires identifying how new movement patterns are normally acquired, retained, and generalized, as well as the effects of distinct brain lesions.
- Development of motor learning in childhood, abnormal motor learning due to neurological damage, and how we can use this information to improve rehabilitation.
This promises to be an insightful and engaging lecture. We strongly encourage all students, faculty, and staff to attend.
