MATHEMATICAL MODELING COMPETITIONS (SCUDEM 2023, MCM/ICM 2024)
The Department of Mathematics plans to prepare and support UMD teams to participate in the upcoming events in Mathematical Modeling: the 8th annual SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations Modeling (SCUDEM), and the next annual Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) 2024 editions.
These competitions provide a chance to challenge your brain, solve a real world problem, and get recognition for it on an international stage. They are an excellent opportunity to develop interpersonal skills through teamwork. It is also an impressive resume credential and an advantage when applying for internships or graduate schools.
Here is a more detailed description of these events: A team shall consist of up to three students from the same school. A math major is not required and students may be from any field of study. An ideal team member would be a sophomore or junior student who has completed all lower level required courses by their respective Departments. UMD teams will be formed over the next three weeks (before October 19th) and will be registered for the upcoming SCUDEM 2023.
The SCUDEM challenge begins on Friday, October 20th and ends on Monday, November 13th. Each team will have three weeks to work through one of three given real-world modeling problems. Teams will produce a 10-minute video presentation of their model which will be reviewed by at least 3 judges.
The MCM and ICM competitions will take place over a period of five days, February 1-5, 2024. At the end of the competition each team will have to upload their final report.
In either competition, each team will select one problem from a set of three problems posted online at the beginning of the competition.
