Study on creating research
environments that are inclusive of autistic students
The Promoting Autism Inclusion and Representation (PAIR)
project team is currently recruiting participants for a study focused on
understanding the components of inclusive research environments for autistic
student researchers. The information gained from this study will be used to
create an effective, evidence-based training program for faculty/ lab staff to
increase awareness of autism and autistic students’ needs and give concrete
tips on how to promote acceptance of autism in one’s research lab.
Autistic students who have
experience in a STEM research lab (e.g., as an undergraduate or graduate
research assistant, for credit, paid, or volunteer) or would like to be
involved in STEM research as an undergraduate research assistant are invited to
participate in a focus group to share: your experience working in a research
lab, general academic experiences, and/or barriers experienced in attaining
entry to a STEM research lab. Participants must be a STEM major or are
considering becoming a STEM major. Focus groups can be on Zoom or in person at
the University of Maryland. Participation will include a 15-minute pre-survey
and a focus group that will take about 75-90 minutes. You will receive a $50
gift card for your participation. Alternative formats to the focus group are
available to those who would be more comfortable with a one-onone format or
some other alternative. Please contact us for more information.
